By day I'm a video game consultant, and I also volunteer at the German Shepherd Dog Welfare Fund - the charity that rescued the dog I adopted last year. I've also recently started compiling a website covering the history of the village I live, although I'm hoping to draw in some help for that project! Here is scratchpad when I need it, and a place for my personal projects. It's also an archive from back when this was was my writing blog.

Book Impressions - Qualia by Marie Brown
I loved this book. It's an interesting and fun take on the fall. The mythos is well thought out, and different enough to stand out. If you like your demon and angel action then you need to check this out.
The story itself is well paced building to a unexpected climax. The main character (Joe) is ambiguous and has a wry humour about him that I wasn't sure about at first, but won me over before the end. The action is well written and there from the very start.
It has a strong metaphysical element, which I enjoyed. It's revealed step by step drawing you deeper into the world.
Highly recommended.
When the archangel Metatron offers his incompetent human assistant Joe, one final chance to cleanse his sullied soul, he jumps at the chance. But with Armageddon looming, Joe had better find out what's really going on, because, once Lucifer is released, any human will have missed their chance to pick a side.
However, as he prepares to deliver Graham Latimer, Lucifer's unwilling and confused human host to the angels, Joe discovers that all may not be as it seems. Hell is no longer the realm of eternal torment and Metatron's actions are not divinely inspired. Pursued by the very angels with whom he has worked for so long, Joe travels with a diverse group of 'demons' through what is left of the seven circles in an attempt to keep Graham safe and stop Metatron from fooling the other angels into destroying the world.
Facing his own personal demons, which are far more dangerous than those creatures around him and trying to find the 'truth' amongst the varying shades of grey that make up 'good' and 'evil', Joe has just one chance to make a difference. However any change is going to come at a cost and nobody, demon, angel or human, wants to pay the price.

Guest Author Interview - M L Chesley
Hi and welcome to the start of a new week. We were blessed with sunshine over the weekend, so it's a shame to be back in the office, still we have a new guest author interview to keep us going - today we meet fantasy author - M L Chesley.
Please introduce yourself, who are you and what do you do?
My name is Mel Chesley. When I am not working part time at the local Boy's & Girl's Club, I'm a writer of fantasy.
What first inspired you to start writing?
My geek is going to show. I started writing when I was a teenager. Mostly fan-fiction for things like 'Elf Quest' and Dungeons & Dragons.
And what was your first story?
It was a fantasy set in the Underworld. It included demons rising up against a kingdom determined to steal the legendary Book of Shadows.
How do you prepare yourself for a writing session?
Usually, I will just put on my writing playlist on my iTunes and just get right to it. If I put too much thought into writing, I'll talk myself out of it.
What is your favourite book and why?
I have to go with 'Faerie Tale' by Raymond E. Feist. I read that book when I was younger and it always stuck with me. Can't really explain why.
If you could work with any author who would it be?
Tolkien (yes I know he's long gone) or Feist.
What advice would you give new and aspiring authors?
Build your reader base and platform, then get your writing out there. Flood the market with your work, but don't sacrifice perfection or professionalism!
What are you working on at the moment?
I'm currently revising my second book in my "Shadow of the Rose" series, "Veritas".
Tell us about your latest work and how we can find out more.
My debut novel, "Adversarius, Shadow of the Rose: Book One" is currently available on Smashwords and Amazon. It is a high fantasy that includes lots of typical fantasy races such as orgres, elves and the like. It also includes Dragons, dragonkin, Elfcats and Mahjii (wizards). Oh, and pirates. Spelled with a 'y'. Can't forget the pirates!

Thanks to Mel for sharing her thoughts with us, on Wednesday we meet Tista Ray.

Guest Post - Tips For Your Book Release
What a great time to self-publish. There are so many sources out there to help get our works out to readers. Many of these authors have become best-sellers. Most will not.
What can you do to ensure your book will be a success. First of all, realize that few new authors become overnight successes. For most of us, it will take years of hard work just to earn anything decent. There are some things we can do to help us along.
First of all, editing is essential. There are way too many e-books out there that are terrible reads. Is that what you want to be known for? Many self-published authors skip this step because they want to get published quickly and because they don’t want ‘criticism of their work. If you can’t accept basic editing, how will you accept negative reviews?
1. Editing is essential
Most self-published authors are short on money so be careful when you spend your money you’ve allocated for promotion of your book. Don’t just jump in and start spending hundreds of dollars to promote your book. Check those sites out carefully.
2. Watch your investments
A great book cover is essential. You can learn to make your own or hire someone. Book cover prices are competitive, but make sure you check the person out. The book cover and your title are what catches a reader’s eye.
3. The right title and cover are important
You are not just selling your book, you are selling you. This goes for any product and its salesman. If you have the money to hire a reputable marketing company, that’s the way to go. Most of us do not, and this is the biggest mistake self-published authors make - not marketing. I guarantee the two worst marketing approaches in today’s world are: ‘Hi. I just joined this group. I wrote a book and you can find it at ......’ Not only this statement, but the fact that the person will flood the streams with ‘buy my book’ will just irritate the other members. The second one is sending out e-mails asking your contacts to buy your book. If you’ve studied marketing principles, you’ll know how to write that e-mail. Have you studied marketing principles?
4. Study marketing and how to market
Build your Landing Page, your Google Page, your Facebook Page, your Twitter Page, your Goodreads Author Page, and your Amazon, Lulu, Smashwords, etc pages. Keep them active.
5. Let the world see the great success that you are.
Sadly, you also have to watch your stats. How are you being perceived? How many new visitors came to your website? How many minutes were they there? How many sites are you in? If you join sites just to get your name out, that won’t work. You have to be active. If you belong to every site that you can find, you won’t have enough time to get known. Give each site some time. If you don’t see a benefit to you, get out. The best sites today are Facebook, Twitter, LinkdIn, Goodreads, and Pinterest. Google your writing name. Can you find yourself easily? Are you on the first page? Don’t join Pinterest and put your book(s) out and that’s all. You won’t get any followers. Build boards you’re interested in and again, be active.
6. Get known by making a positive presence on the internet.
Should you or shouldn’t you get reviewed, interviewed, or do guest posts? There are those who feel these don’t do you much good. I disagree. It gets you known around the internet in wider and wider circles.
Remember to be patient. One friend gave me a quote that has inspired me to not stop, but to keep going:
On the road to their destination
Lie the bleached bones
Of countless millions
Who – when at the brink of decision
Hesitated
And were lost.
Harriet Beecher Stowe once said:
When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, ‘til it seems as though you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.
From Proverbs:
Whatever you do, do it with all your heart.
And finally, in the words of that great philosopher Yoda:
No, try not, do or do not…, there is no try….
Don’t give up. Have patience. Watch your investment in your book(s), and get into marketing.
Believe in yourself and dream above the clouds. I do, and I believe in you.
