This is a lot of fun to watch. It's based upon a simple idea, a group of people wake to find themselves in a maze of rooms. They have to find their way through the maze to find the exit. Unfortunately for them some of the rooms contain traps. Some of these traps are quite nasty and imaginative.
The film manages a good balance between the visceral horror of the traps and the mounting pressure of their situation. It's a low budget film, but that doesn't matter as it is the story's simplicity and the balance of characters and their interactions that makes it an excellent film.
With my Producer's hat on I'd say it would make an excellent game as well.
Five strangers find themselves trapped in a maze-like prison. Led by cop Quentin (Maurice Dean Wint) and expert jailbreaker Rennes (Wayne Robson) they move from room to room, discovering several traps along the way. Maths student Leaven (Nicole De Boer) ascertains that the numbers on each room reveal which is safe, but this does not prevent the death of Rennes. The group are then joined by the autistic Kazan (Andrew Miller), who also has a gift for numbers. It soon becomes clear that each of them possesses the peculiar skills necessary to escape their prison, if they don't wind up dead first.
Buy Cube now from Amazon (it really is worth watching)
By day I'm a video game consultant, and I also volunteer at the German Shepherd Dog Welfare Fund - the charity that rescued the dog I adopted last year. I've also recently started compiling a website covering the history of the village I live, although I'm hoping to draw in some help for that project! Here is scratchpad when I need it, and a place for my personal projects. It's also an archive from back when this was was my writing blog.
One of my all-time favourite films, and definitely superior to the sequel...
ReplyDeleteAgreed, the sequel is fun, but not as good. The third film spoils the series in my opinion.
