Film Review - Fairytale

Fairytale is a decent if uneven horror film. The story starts with a single mother moving into a new house with her daughter. The girl loses her first baby tooth and following tradition puts it under her pillow for the tooth fairy. To the mother's surprise the tooth is collected and things go to hell from that point on.

This is a bit of an odd film to rate as the overall film is very much greater than the sum of its parts. The main issue is the mother, she doesn't come across very well as if the actress was just going through the motions. Of course she may have been going for a more understated performance, but if that was the case it didn't work too well. The father is also problematic, but he's not in the film much so is less of an issue.

The other issue is that the story (to begin with at any rate) is pedestrian and for half of the film you're left with the impression of an average horror movie. Thankfully that changes as the film nears the end and it all starts coming together. In fact by the end of the film it feels like a superb work, genius almost.

So on balance it's a good watch, but worth persevering with to experience the conclusion which is worth the time in it's own right.

There is no "happy ever after" here - FAIRYTALE is the dark and twisted story about a demonic Del Toro-like Tooth Fairy hell-bent on revenge.
