This book has sat on my TBR list for a while, in fairness I'm not the target audience, but I'd heard good things and I'm happy to read something different every now and again, that way I get to discover little treasures like this.
The story is a coming of age tale about Alice Parker who discovers she has more than puberty to deal with as her body starts experiencing changes. The discovery brings on changes that are more than physical for Alice.
While the book is aimed at younger readers I did enjoy reading it. The story is solid and progresses at a reasonable pace. It also weaves the normality of Alice's regular activities with the more unusual ones stemming from her metamorphosis. The writing is clear and well polished. The world of thirteen year old girls isn't one I'm familiar with but the author provided me with the sense of her concerns and challenges.
Overall it's a fun read that's well written and has an interesting story.
Feisty thirteen-year-old Alice Parker knows something isn't right. Aches and pains have started, she hardly sleeps and her craving for fruit is out of control. Suddenly she is top of the class in every subject. Feeling at odds with the world and being bullied by the 'coven' at school, Alice can't take much more. Only when she collapses and experiences a life-changing transformation does she learn why she is different. But with this new identity comes responsibility and Alice isn't convinced she can rise to the challenge. She just wants to be normal! The fact is she's anything but.
Forgotten tales of a magical society are catapulted into the daily life of strong, memorable female characters who readers will grow to love. An intriguing blend of realism, suspense and fantasy, a must-read for girls of 7+.
Alice Parker's Metamorphosis is available from Amazon (and is a decent read)
