Film Review - The Shining

A classic horror film and Jack Nicholson was born for this role. He plays a fine nutter. The film tells the story of a writer and his family living in a hotel as caretakers for the winter. The hotel has ghosts that hint at terrible events that have happened there in the past.

Nicholson's descent into haunted madness is very well done, scarily so in places. The story builds nicely to a dramatic conclusion.

A fine horror film that has stood the test of time, if you haven't seen this then shame on you :-)

Stanley Kubrick directs this chilling adaptation of the Stephen King shocker. Seeking solitude in order to write a novel, Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) takes a job as an off-season caretaker at the remote Overlook Hotel in Colorado. Eager to get started, Jack disregards warnings that the isolation drove a former caretaker mad, and moves into the massive resort with his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and son Danny (Danny Lloyd). But Danny has a supernatural gift which makes him aware of an evil lurking in the hotel, and sure enough, as winter storms cut the hotel off from civilisation, Jack gradually becomes murderously insane.

Buy The Shining now from Amazon (you should - it's great!)

  1. This was a fine film, both directed and played well. However I think Jack Nicholson was the wrong person for the lead role as the character was supposedly normal at the beginning, and driven mad during the novel. The problem is that a lot of people assume Nicholson is completely boners, anyway. Or is that just me?

    1. He does have a reputation, so you automatically assume he will be a nutter at some stage in the film.
